Abstract
The Biology and Geomorphology of Tropical Islands was a Fall 1993 undergraduate course at the University of California Berkeley. Led by principal instructor Dr Mary Power and teaching assistants Fred Booker and Tim Krantz, the class focused on the ecology and geomorphology of terrestrial and marine environments on tropical islands. The fifteen enrolled students spent the first seven weeks on the Berkeley campus attending lectures given by leading scholars from various departments. Following this campus component, the class traveled to the Gump Marine Biological Field Station on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia for seven weeks of field work. During this time, the students focused primarily on conducting independent research projects covering diverse topics such as coral reef ecosystems, agriculture, invasive plant species, and human environmental impacts. Upon returning to Berkeley, the students presented their research at an oral symposium and compiled their findings into a final volume of research papers.
