Marchioni addressed compliance with the UN BBNJ treaty and its Standardised Batch Identifier for tracking marine genetic resources and benefit-sharing. Arguing that 'trust is a local matter', he proposed tamper-detectable 'sealed envelopes' of metadata that preserve local control while proving identity, intent and integrity.
